Research and Grants

When the NLMSF receives a proposal for Request for Funds from an investigator, our scientific team first reads it to evaluate it for completeness. Specifically, a request needs to include several items before it can be considered. If anything is missing one of the doctors will contact the investigator. At that time there will be a general discussion regarding the proposal and any questions the reviewing doctor may have at that point. When all information has been received, two additional medical colleagues are asked to review the proposal and asked their opinion. Finally a recommendation is then made to the Board.

Cooperstown- The fight against a rare cancer gets a boost from a national foundation with local ties.

Today Ed and Lori Hoag gave a $70,000 check to Dr. David Blask at the Bassett Research Institute on behalf on the National Leiomyosarcoma Foundation of Maryland, New York.

"We're going to do the first experiments in a way just to see if melatonin has some activity in inhibiting cancer," said Dr. Blask. "We will be able to use the results of the study, if it turns out to be positive, to justify a larger study that would involve treating people who have LMS."

The money will be used by a research team at Bassett to study the cancer's response to melatonin.

Ed Hoag says the foundations work is in memory of his late wife, who died of LMS.

"She wanted the awareness out there," Hoag said. "That this diseas is there, and we need to do something with it."

"It's giving everyone that's been diagnosed with this disease another chance," said Lori Hoag of the Foundation."A sense of hope to think that there's another researcher out there willing to fight for our cause."
