Help us help Sam find a new home!
This is my mom, Sandra Baker at a hospice in Winchester VA in July 2009, about a month before she passed away from Leiomyosarcoma. Isn't she beautiful?
As everyone on this site knows, leiomyosarcoma is rare, by my mom always over-did things, so she got it in usual locations. Her doctors found tumors in her breasts and around her adrenal gland. By the time the doctors at Johns Hopkins operated, the tumor around her adrenal gland had breached her aorta. Despite the surgeries and a couple of attempts at chemo, her cancer returned around the adrenal area and metastasized to her lungs, and we lost the center of our world on August 20, 2009 at 9:05am.
As a post-script to this sad story, I got word earlier this month that my father has decided he cannot keep my mom's favorite dog, Sam. Here are a couple pictures of him:

Sam is a joy, easy to take care of, demands very little attention. Sam doesn't like car rides which means my father has to stick close to home which is, I guess, why he wont keep Sam. Sam will tell you when he needs to go out, then he comes right back in. He wants to beside his person most of all. He has some eye problems- cataracts, I think, so he's older. As far as I know, he is healthy otherwise. I believe he is neutered. I doubt my father has taken Sam to the vet, so he hasn't had any veterinary attention since before June 2009. He was a rescue, so I really don't know much about him.
Unfortunately, I live in Arizona with 4 cats in a condo while Sam is still in Berryville, VA, a town just east of Winchester and an hour west of Fairfax, VA. I don't think he'd survive a trip out to Arizona, and I don't know if he likes cats. My sister has 2 dogs and a bevy of birds in a condo, so she can't take Sam, either.
What breaks my heart is that mom always said she thought Sam had had a hard life. The though of him having a rough life, finding a good mom only to have her disappear, having his new main care-giver turn him over to the Humane Society and probably euthanize is just too much on top of everything else. And he dosn't have much time. My father said he'd take Sam to his local humane society at the end of May.
