Board Members: How and Why?
by Joni Fixel
What is important about the Board of Directors?
All of the Board of Directors once asked themselves “How can I help?” And eventually each became a Board Member. The NLMSF Board has 9 (nine) Directors. Every year 3 (three) positions are open and come up for election. The NLMSF, like other non-profit organizations, is legally required to follow the original intent and bylaws of the organization as it was when founded. One thing that is important is that each Board member actively participates in the governance of the foundation.
The Board of Directors meets to discuss legal issues, medical grant requests, financial issues, fundraising requests, etc. The Board meetings typically last 1-2 hours quarterly and the individual time devoted throughout the year is really minimal as long as each Board Member stays actively involved. But don’t trivialize the importance of the Board or the decisions that are made for the future of the NLMSF – very little time is needed to make certain that the foundation is running smoothly and growing according to the original mission. We are seeking Board members who will actively participate in the future of the NLMSF.
The National Leiomyosarcoma Foundation, Inc. is here to serve those touched by LMS nationwide and we look forward to your questions, comments and participation.
In 2011, we currently have 4 Board positions open. Read about each candidate below.

Marc E. Jacobs - New Jersey
jacobsm55@yahoo.com
My name is Marc E. Jacobs. I am married and father of two boys ages 17 and 15. We live in Mendham, New Jersey. I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio and attended Saint Xavier High School and Wittenberg University. For the past 25 years, I have worked in the consumer products industry in sales and marketing with such companies as Nestle, Heinz and Domino /C&H Sugar. Our family has lived all over the United States: Pittsburgh, Connecticut, Los Angeles, and Cleveland and for the past 11 years in Mendham, New Jersey. I have always been active in the community; volunteering as a basketball, baseball and football coach as well as serving on the Mendham Little League Board of Directors. I also served for a number of years on the Wittenberg East Asian Studies Alumni Board.
I would like to serve on the National LeioMyoSarcoma Foundation (NLMSF) Board of Directors so that I can help the Foundation build awareness with the public and raise money to support research into finding a cure for LeioMyoSarcoma. A year ago my youngest brother Neal was diagnosed with LeioMyoSarcoma and is being treated at MD Anderson in Houston. I have seen up close the effect that LeioMyoSarcoma has on individuals and families. To balance that I witnessed the outpouring of love and support for those affected by this cancer and that has spurred me to want to become more involved in awareness building and outreach. I believe that I can bring my marketing experience to help build awareness as well as my sales skills and contacts to aid in fundraising.
My greatest teachers were my parents and they showed through their words and especially by how they lived their lives the importance of selflessness and serving others. That is how I try to live my life both as a husband, father, and member of my community. I have the passion and drive to serve on the Board and help achieve the goals of the Foundation so that we can find a cure for this terrible disease and support those individuals and families affected by it.

Pam McNamara - Michigan

I am a native Michiganian and currently reside in Michigan. I grew up in Dearborn Michigan and graduated from high school in 1962. After marrying and having a family I worked as a bank teller for several years, took several basic college accounting courses, and then pursued a career in the insurance industry becoming a licensed insurance agent in Life,Health and Disability, Property and Casualty working for an independent insurance agency. I retired in 1998 as we were building our retirement home in northern Michigan.
Unfortunately, my husband passed away very suddenly in 2001 and never realized his dream.
I have two children and three grandchildren, all wonderful of course!
I am now in a committed relationship, he is a survivor of colon and pancreatic cancer and is currently being treated for prostate cancer and is doing well at this time. This has been quite a journey and we are grateful for each day.
My interest in being a board member would allow me to interact with the other foundation members, learn more about the foundation and help promote awareness of LMS which is a very important part of being involved along with fundraising activities.

George Peters - Michigan

Chaplin, Audit Committee Chair
My name is George Peters, I live in Taylor, Michigan. I am the Associate Paster of Emmanuel Baptist church in Taylor, Michigan. I also work for Rogers Electric Supply, as a warehouse worker and truck driver. My wife Vicky (alias LMS Idol) works there also.
I became associated with NLMSF, when my sister-in-law Theresa Miller was diagnosed with LMS. Her and Vicky found out about the BridgeFest and went and met the LMS family. Four tow years I drove them to HugFest and dropped them off and I went to visit friends. Then in 2006 I went to BridgeFest with them and met the LMS Family. As people came off the bridge I decided to meet them and pass out ribbons to help make the people aware of LMS. I was amazed at the amount of people that came off that bridge. The next year I gave out more ribbons and in 2008 even more. People need to know about LMS.
In 2007, I was asked if I would be the chaplain for the NLMSF and I considered this an honor. Then in 2008, I was asked if I would be on the Board of Directors and I was honored to be asked. I hope that I will continue to be an asset to the Board in making decisions for the good of the NLMSF.
